| Time Out For Trivia -- Presidential Style

I like to collect things related to the Presidents. It is a hobby of mine. I read a lot of presidential history. I am always learning something new.

For instance: Did you know we had a gay president? James Buchanan who served from 1857-1861. His lover was Rufus King who was sworn in as Vice President in 1853 in the Franklin Pierce administration. Tragically, King died before he could start his new position. He did live long enough to be sworn in. Oddly, he was sworn into the office of Vice President while he was visiting Havana, Cuba. Buchanan and King lived together for many years. Buchanan never got over the death of King and lamented his loss in several letters written while he was President. Buchanan was the only President never to marry.

Speaking of Franklin Pierce -- he was President from 1853-1857. He was a raging alcoholic. Two months before his was to take office his only child, Bernie, was killed when a railroad car became detached and crushed the boy to death. Pierce’s wife was so devastated by the loss that she stayed in mourning for the rest of her life. She refused to partake in any White House functions and stayed secluded. Pierce was forced to use his wife’s aunt as the official White House hostess.

Franklin Roosevelt’s last words before he dropped dead where “I have a terrific headache.” James Madison’s last words where “I always talk better lying down.”

President William Harrison was the only President to die in debt. President Ulysses Grant would have died in debt as well, but he rushed through his final months on earth writing his memoir, which netted him a half million dollars.

Between the years 1822 and 1826 there where 18 men who were president or destined to be president that were alive; the largest number ever in US History. They were: J. Adams, Jefferson, Madison, Monroe, J.Q. Adams, Jackson, Van Buren, W.H. Harrison, Tyler, Polk, Taylor, Fillmore, Pierce, Buchanan, Lincoln, A Johnson, Grant and Hayes.
13 of the 43 Presidents were Episcopalians, 27 of the 43 were lawyers. 6 out of the 43 served less than one term.

I could go on and on. I find it interesting.

Political Satire of James Buchanan, our gay president. His lover was Rufus King. Note the King of Hearts sticking out of the pocket. Buchanan never married and was given the nickname "old maid" by his enemies.
